7 things nobody tells you before you buy balcony pixel lights

The videos are everywhere this year. Here is what they leave out, from people who sell them.

A balcony with Santa in LED dots on a snowy night

It's a cold evening in December. Every house on the next street has a lit up yard. Your building has a row of dark balconies and one sad string of lights. You've seen the videos of Santa glowing across a balcony and you're about to tap Buy.

1

Most of the videos are not real footage.

Many ads show a sharp picture across a whole balcony. Those are made with AI or editing. A 400-LED curtain shows pixel art: 20 dots across, 20 dots down.

2

400 dots is enough, from the street.

Up close you see separate lights. From the sidewalk the dots join into Santa, a tree or a word. That's where your neighbors see it.

3

Pick the size from your railing.

2 x 2 m suits up to about 2.5 m of railing, 3 x 3 m up to 3.5 m. Both have the same 400 dots: the big one makes a bigger picture, not a sharper one.

4

You don't need a drill.

Hooks or cable ties on the railing hold it all season and come off in a minute in January.

5

Rain is fine. Go easy on the outlet.

The curtain is waterproof, rated IP65, so rain and snow don't stop it. It runs on USB, from a phone charger or a power bank. Outside, use an outdoor-rated extension cord and never overload outlets.2

6

Stand close when you change the picture.

Phone apps for these lights talk over Bluetooth. Change the design within a few meters of the curtain.

7

Christmas has a shipping deadline.

Orders ship within 3 business days, then tracked delivery takes 7 to 12 days. Order by December 8 and it arrives before Christmas. After that, nobody can honestly promise it, so we close orders.

How it works

Tie it on, plug it in, pick a picture.

Tie it on

Hooks or cable ties hold the top cable to the railing, a curtain rod or a fence. Nothing goes into the wall.

Plug it in

It runs on USB: a phone charger in an outlet, or a power bank. Outside, use an outdoor-rated extension cord.
